CHENNAI: The centuries-old Rameswaram temple is getting a much-needed facelift with religious organsiations and corporates donating money to refurbish it. Two more rajagopurams (big towers) are being constructed on the northern and southern end of the temple with donations from Sringeri Sankaracharya and a Coimbatore-based businessman.
Within the temple too, renovation has been undertaken and more choultries are being constructed for the benefit of devotees. Located on Tamil Nadu's eastern coast, the scenic seaside temple town Rameswaram, called the southern Kashi, draws devotees from across the country. For long, the temple here had been in a bad shape with complaints pouring in about sewage entering one of the 22 sacred wells scattered around the premises. Kanyakumari-based Vivekananda Kendra started cleaning up the temple and wells, said to find a mention in ancient scriptures.
"Two temple towers with five tiers each are being constructed on the north and south side of the shore temple at a cost of 1.80 crore and 1.96 crore. The Devi shrine has also been renovated at a cost of 92 lakh," said an official attached to Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments department. The temple administration has undertaken a project to repair the eastern side tower facing the sea and also refurbishing the third corridor, said to be one of the longest corridors, besides other small shrines on the premises, at a cost of 5.16 crore, the official said.
