On August 7, 2024, Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya NEEPCO Bokuloni (VKV Bokuloni) in Assam, celebrated National Handloom Day with a special event highlighting the rich tradition of handloom weaving. The event was graced by the presence of Ms. Sangeeta Mech and Ms. Jitu Moni Phukan skilled resource person, who demonstrated the intricate weaving process.
The session was an insightful experience for the students, as Ms. Sangeeta Mech and Ms. Jitu Moni Phukan meticulously explained and showcased the steps involved in weaving, focusing on the creation of the traditional Assamese “Gamusa.” The demonstration included practical guidance on using the loom and the various techniques employed in handloom weaving.
In an exciting development, the Vidyalaya announced the introduction of a weaving course starting in November, where students will be taught the art of weaving gamusas. All necessary materials for the course were presented during the event, ensuring that students will have hands-on experience in this traditional craft.
The celebration was attended by 40 enthusiastic students eager to learn and preserve this cultural heritage. The event was conducted under the able guidance of Principal Smt. Meghna Kakoty, who emphasized the importance of preserving and promoting traditional crafts among the younger generation.
