Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture - Arunachal Pradesh Chapter in collaboration with Monyul Socio – Cultural Development Society, Mon region organized a three days seminar on 30th July to 1st August 2010, on topic "Traditional System change and continuity amongst Monpas.”


30 July 2010 (Day One)

The seminar was inaugurated by Shri Dorjee Khandu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh as chief guest, Maneeneya A Balakrishnan, Vice President Vivekananda Kendra as guest of honour and H.E Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, Hon’ble chairman Karmik and Adyatmik Affairs presided the entire proceedings in presence of dignitaries which included high Govt officials, delegates from West Kameng and Tawang districts, students, volunteers and monks from different monastic institutions.

Shri Passang Khandu, Member MSCDS welcomed each and every one for the first ever seminar of its kind. Shri Rinchen Dorjee, Chairman APPSC, while giving keynote address stressed upon the importance of such seminar and encouraged everyone to participate with full zeal. He vehemently eulogized such seminars for days to come.

Hon’ble Chief Minister who is also the chief patron of the organizing committee for the semianar hoped for such seminars be organized in regular intervals so that younger generation know about its importance.

“Education is must but not at the cost of your mother tongue,” he argued and stressed on laying emphasis on third language introduced in schools.

Stressing the importance of girl education he said that “if a girl is educated, a family is educated and when a family is educated, the whole society is educated.”

Shri A. Blakrishnan emphasized the need to bring development with culture. He dwelt at length the curriculums of VKIC and expected a positive outcome from the seminar.

H E Tsona Gontse Rinpoche said “we are looking for an enlightened society in the near future and for which a collective effort is required from all corners."

Change is necessary, as it reflects the development of an individual and society but at same time taking along the indigenous cultural traditions is equally important as it reflects the identity, he affirmed.

Cultural Evening

The students of CHICS, Dahung University performed the opera on great legend Khandro Drowa Zangmo which was presided over by Su B Nivedita, Vice President Vivekanada Kendra and Geshe Lama Nawang Tashi Bapu, Principal CHICS, Dahung.

Topic: - Customarily Laws and Traditional System.

Chaired by: - Shri Rinchin Tashi, Deputy Commissioner West Kameng

Paper presentation by: - Shri Maling Gombu and Shri Dorjee Tsering.

Technical Session – III

Topic: - Marriage system, death and birth ceremonies.

Chaired by: - Shri Rinchen Dorjee, Chirman APPSC

Paper presentation by: - Shri Sang Rakpa and Shri Tenzin Rakpa. Kalaktang.

Technical Session – IV

Topic: - Influence of Buddhism in Monpa society.

Chaired by – H E Guru Tulku Rinpoche, Abbot Tawang Monastry.

Cutural Programme

In the evening cultural event by different cultural troops were hoisted for the visiting dignitaries. This was chaired by Shri Tsewang Dondup, Parliamentary Secretary Planning.

1. Aji Lhamu Dance by Karseneng Jamkher cultural troop.

2. Yak dance by Seru cultural troop.

3. Lion dance by Shyo cultural troop.

4. Traditional dance by Gyankher cultural troop.

5. Traditional dance by Bomba sec school cultural troop.

Technical Session – V

Topic: - Phlaa festival

Chaired by – Shri Rinchen Dorjee, Chairman APPSC

Paper presentation by: - Shri Kezang Wangdi and Shri Maling Gombu


Technical Session – VI

Topic: - Status of Women in Monpa society. Followed by panel discussion.

Chaired by: - Shri Thupten Tempa, Chairman Resource Mobilization.

Paper presentation by: - Smti Nyomba.

Formation of common platform for the Monpa community at large.

Chaired by: - H E Tsona Gontse Rinpoche, Hon’ble Chairman DOKAA.

Later resolutions were passed, adhoc committee was formed to chalk out By-laws and the next meeting was fixed on 12th November 2010. at Dirang, West Kameng to finalize the By- laws for the formation of the committee.

Valedictory function

Shri Tsewang Dondup, Parliamentary Secretary Planning was the chief guest for the valedictory function. Su B. Nividita, Vice President Vivekananda Kendra was the guest of honour. She spoke on the importance of such seminars which finally concluded with distribution of gifts for the student delegates by the chief guest.

She urged everyone to follow up the developments and resolution passed in these three days of seminar.

The three days of seminar came to end with the cultural event hoisted by Shri Dorjee Khandu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh and felicitation of the visiting dignitaries at Zomkhang Hall, Tawang.
